about

As a producer, Arma is someone who’s constantly looking to improve his craft and refuses to be pigeonholed to a single genre or BPM. Whether he’s constructing sweet R&G melodies on his “Wifey Tales” EP series or lo-fi house under his DJ VHS moniker, his tunes are all unified through their high-energy approach and a sense of fun that can sometimes be missing from songs made for the club. Unsurprisingly, his take on numerous styles from the dance music spectrum have quickly earned him support from some serious selectors and tastemakers, including radio support from Doctor Jeep, Amy Becker and Nervous Horizon, a signing to Melé’s Quadrants imprint and a feature on Monki’s FABRICLIVE mix CD.

Following on from the massive “Safari EP” released via Bristol’s prjkts, this release is a further testament to Arma’s ear for infectious drum patterns and brilliant skills as a sampler. “Favela” and “Boiler” draw inspiration from Arma’s first experience of Notting Hill Carnival five years ago and a recent enjoyment of binge watching Boiler Room sets also from around 2011-2. As such his UK funky stylings on these productions are littered with trumpets, syncopated drums patterns and a brilliantly measured approach to buildups and hooks perfect for a sweaty Boiler Room performance. These are two songs that are bound to get the iciest crowds moving and even, possibly, smiling.

Sounds of Sumo and Roska Kicks and Snares signee Murder he Wrote strips back some of the percussion on his remix of “Favela,” turning it into something resembling a slowed garage tune without detracting from the song’s original UK funky influence. His wonky bassline could shake the paint of the walls of a club whilst his reworking of the melody takes the song in a completely different direction that’s more major than minor in tonality.
